            Jane Addams Peace Award—annual award for books addressing themes or topics promoting peace, justice, world community, and/or equality of sexes and all races. Sponsored by Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom.

             National Book Award—annual award in young people's literature; celebrates best of American literature, strives to expand its audience and enhance the cultural value of good writing in America.  The 2007 award given to Spokane author Sherman Alexie for The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian.  Interview:

Multicultural Literature      
           The Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Compiles and publishes comprehensive resource listings of multicultural literature with bibliographies and booklists organized by age group, covering a wide range of themes and topics. 

           Cynthia Leitich-Smith, author, teacher and specialist on multicultural literature, incorporates books and resources about diversity into her website for parents, teachers, and librarians.  Website recommended by ALA in Great Web Sites for Kids.

Intellectual Freedom
            Banned and challenged books in Oregon from 1979-2007 have been researched and compiled for an online database sponsored by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Oregon. The Oregon Library Association Intellectual Freedom Committee, the American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom, and the Oregon Association of School Libraries Intellectual Freedom Committee cooperated in its development.
